In the Elephant's Mouth
In the Elephant's Mouth began
with one director, five actors, three designers, and a performance date; no script, no concept -- except to see
what emerged from pure process. The result of the six-month rehearsal process -- including a workshop performance
halfway through with audience feedback -- was a one-hour, high-energy performance exploring the themes of Fate
and the individual. We used pieces from a variety of "classic" texts of the theatre, including Shakespeare, Chekhov,
Shaw, Strindberg, Seami, Pirandello and many others. Each piece of text dealt with the human relationship to
mortality in some way, and each was filtered through modern television, film and music genres, such as Western
(Three Sisters), Horror (Everyman), WWF (Romeo and Juliet) and the Blues (Macbeth). |
